Blogosphere
I wonder if historians will study the birth of the Internet as a major step forward in our communicative abilities—right up there with the invention of the printing press. It seems likely. After all in just a matter of years we went from using letters to exchange information to using emails, instant messages, Facebook, enewsletters and blogs.
And speaking of blogs, we’ve recently introduced what may just be the most helpful site as you wade through your college decision: Rudi’s Blog. Rudi is a new freshman here who is sharing her experiences directly (unfiltered) with you. She will present you with the most truthful perspective you’re bound to get on the life of a Stephens student. Click over, you won’t be disappointed.
And in case you didn’t know, our president also has a blog. Happy reading!
As always, we are here to answer any of your questions. Give us a call at (800) 876-7207 or find your Admissions
counselor and email her/him directly.
Cheers,

Stephens College
The Adventures of Susie Stephens, Episode 2
(and ... in case you missed it: Episode 1)
I was a freshman and the world, particularly it seemed this new college world, burned brightly. Everything was vivid, distinct. The outlines showed up heavy-handed. I stood in the library’s Penthouse and the spires of Memorial Union contrasted nicely with the deciduous greens in front of me. I wandered into the Firestone Baars Chapel as the sun was streaming through the west windows and the stained glass painted a fire across the floor. At the end of each full day I’d sleep and in the morning my slippered feet padded into the Pillsbury kitchen and the aromas of my suitemate’s percolating Sumatra beans cracked my slumbering mind wide to the myriad stimuli Stephens College presented me.
But as I said I was a freshman, a newbie at an old school that’s brilliant at keeping ahead of the changing times and the needs of students. A case in point would be the Ten Ideals—determining the qualities a young female scholar should possess and then, 60 years later, making sure they’re appropriate for the modern woman.
I remember my first day on campus better than I remember almost any other day in my life. My parents and I drove over the better part of two days from our home in Albuquerque to join the move-in queue. That was a very long drive. As much as I felt good about my college selection, there was no way of knowing at that point if I’d made the right pick. Plus I loved my home and my family, and change is always a stressor, and so it was a long drive. But I didn’t have to wait long to receive confirmation that Stephens was the place for me. As I stepped out of the car I was greeted by the president and her enthusiasm and vigor was so tangible I was bathed in it that very first moment. I became a Stephens woman.
The rest of the people I met that day were all perfect. I had the perfect roommate, the perfect residential advisor, the perfect orientation leaders, the perfect hall of young women. I don’t know what sort of screening process Stephens employs but I found myself surrounded by the wonderful peers who would lead me, challenge me, prod me, inspire me, and befriend me over the next four years and beyond.
Activities for
Prospective Students
Text us at: 573-823-7938. (You can also call us, or email us, or fax us, or send us mail, or stop in.)
We encourage campus visits for all students as this is the best way to decide if an institution is right for you. You and your family can come to Stephens any weekday of the year and we will engage you in as minimal or as thorough an experience as you desire.
We offer a tour of campus (including a viewing of a residence hall), and meetings with your admissions counselor and a financial aid advisor, should you desire. During the school year, these visits also often include meeting with a professor, sitting in on a class, eating a meal in the cafeteria with a student ambassador, and even staying overnight with a current student.
We also have a handful of special visit opportunities throughout the year:

Highlighted Columbia Landmark: Pizza Hang-out
Every good college town has a good college hang-out, so it stands to reason that a great college town (like Columbia) would have a great hang-out—Shakespeare’s Pizza! This is absolutely the quintessential college restaurant. (If you don’t believe me, read our president’s blog post.) From the giant ovens in the front to the pinball machine in the back, everything about this place screams the sort of low-key fun that a young academic craves. There are irreverent table tents to greet the diners and photos of people sporting Shakespeare’s Pizza shirts in locations all over the world adorning the walls. And when your order is ready, the enthusiasm with which they shout your name is equaled only by the satisfaction you’ll feel as you sink your teeth into that first bite.
