Ticking
As I write this, there is a large, ornate, old-fashioned hourglass floating in front of me. (Don't ask why there is such a thing here; it is just one of the quirky features of my office.) This summer I estimated the amount of sand that would need to pass through the hourglass before the beginning of this school year. Well, there is no sand left now. What does this mean? For us, it means we have welcomed the Class of 2013 to campus for the first time as college students. We love this time of year!

Stephens CollegeFor you, it means you have begun your final year of high school. This could not be more exciting. First of all, this is a 10-month celebration of 13 years of school. Soak it in! Relish it! You've done it! Secondly, this is the time when you can begin thinking about the next chapter of your lives. Where will you be next September? The answer may be an historic college in the middle of Missouri.

If you've yet to make your college decision, come visit us. (I'll show you my office's weird, levitating timepiece.) We're here to help and we'll offer advice as impartial as we can make it. We welcome you to call our offices at (800) 876-7207 or find your Admissions counselor and email her/him directly.

And as always, thanks for reading and providing feedback!

Cheers,

The (dreaded) Process
It's easy to be intimidated by the process of applying for and getting accepted into a college. It's also easy to keep putting it off. This is the beginning of your senior year; higher education may be the last thing on your mind. Well, if you'll allow me, I want to spend just a couple moments demystifying this procedure for you.

First of all, if you apply to Stephens online, it's free. Stephens College has rolling admissions, so there aren't specific deadlines, but applying early definitely has its advantages (for example, higher pecking order for housing preferences).

The actual process begins with (1) completing the application. This is a fairly short form where you fill in a bit of personal information, list your extracurricular activities, and write a couple paragraphs about why you're interested in attending Stephens. You can submit this all right on our Web site (did I mention that it's free?) and you're already almost done. We'll need a copy of your ACT or SAT scores, but you can (2) have the tests sent directly to us (the Stephens ACT code is 2374, and SAT code is 6683). And then you'll need to (3) swing by your high school guidance office and have your counselor send (or fax or email) your transcript and a recommendation form. Then … you're done.

Three steps, all simple, and within a couple weeks we'll call you to let you know if you've been accepted. In fact, if you're so inclined, you could go ahead and submit your application right now, while you're thinking about it. There's a little bit of you that wants to, and there's a big bit that will be excited to receive our phone call. Apply now.

Activities for Prospective Students
We encourage campus visits for all students as this is the best way to decide if an institution is right for you. You and your family can come to Stephens any weekday of the year and we will engage you in as minimal or as thorough an experience as you desire.

These visits usually include a tour of campus, and meetings with your admissions counselor and a financial aid advisor. Additionally, they often include meeting with a professor, sitting in on a class, eating a meal in the cafeteria with a student ambassador, and even staying overnight with a current student. horse seats

Also, for those of you who have jam-packed weeks, our first Open Saturday is coming up on Sept. 26. This is a great way to experience campus without having to skip school (we know you'd never do that …) Sign up for it now.

MelanieAnd an enthusiastic greeting to our potential Equestrian majors. We're holding a unique and exciting departmental preview event featuring Olympic gold medalist Melanie Smith-Taylor the weekend of Oct. 17. Read more event info.

For a complete list of campus visit options, go to our 2009-2010 Campus Visit Schedule. You are also welcome to schedule an individual campus visit Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sign up online or call the Office of Admissions at (800) 876-7207.

Highlighted Major: English
studentSo some of you out there in enewsletter land might have designs on becoming an English major. If that's the case, I want to help fortify your spine as you stand up for your ambitions. What other major requires strong writing and reading skills while giving you a solid foundation for so many different career choices? (Speaking as a once-upon-a-time English major myself), never accept criticism for what is one of the most valuable of all possible collegiate disciplines. So...

If your uncle corners you at a family reunion and asks, "You're getting a degree in what?" don't hesitate a moment when you say, "I’m going to follow in the footsteps of Jodie Foster, Susan Sarandon and Reese Witherspoon."

If your best friend prods you with, "What’s an English degree going to do for you?," come back with, "It did plenty for First Lady Laura Bush, astronaut Sally Ride and journalist Diane Sawyer."

And if your guidance counselor says, "Wouldn't you rather get a business degree?," just ask him, "Where would Barbara Walters, Toni Morrison and Joyce Carol Oates be if they hadn't followed their passions?" All of these women graduated with English degrees—as did plenty of men (i.e. Matt Damon, Steven Spielberg, Michael Eisner, Paul Simon, Conan O'Brien, Stephen King and Dr. Seuss).

Stephens' English program is a bridge to a lifetime of confident thinking and professional success. And let's not leave out that we also offer a Creative Writing degree for you all who yearn to become the next great poet or published writer.
