Connect the Dots
As you'll see below, there's a certain artist I really like-Nicoletta Ceccoli. I came across a book that offered a "paint by numbers" approach to recreating her work. I traced the lines and filled in the colors, but of course my "Balloon Girl" looked nothing like the original. Great art is a creation, not an imitation. But, you know what directions can be easily and successfully followed? Our step-by-step application process.

Balloon GirlStep one: complete our online application.
Step two: send in your transcript and test scores.
Step three: earn admissions to this prestigious institution.

It's that simple and I can almost guarantee you that you'll be more satisfied with the results.

If you have any questions about these directions, give us a call at (800) 876-7207 or find your Admissions counselor and email her/him directly.

As always, thanks for reading and providing feedback!

Cheers,

Activities for Prospective Students
Individual Visits are the best way to decide if an institution is right for you. You and your family can come to Stephens any weekday of the year and we will engage you in as minimal or as thorough an experience as you desire. These visits usually include a tour of campus and a meeting with your admissions counselor. Additionally, they often include meeting with a professor, sitting in on a class, eating a meal in the cafeteria with a student ambassador, and even staying overnight with a current student.

And if weekday visits don’t work for you, we offer Saturday Visits, where you get to participate in a discussion/presentation by our president, Dr. Dianne Lynch, talk with Admissions staff and tour campus. Upcoming dates are April 10 and April 17.

Lela Raney Wood Hall We also have several preview events coming up:

  • Friday, March 5: Dance Preview Event (with auditions)
  • March 12-13: Fashion Weekend
  • Friday, April 9: Education Day
  • April 9-10: Open House (All students are welcome to attend, although we have special activities planned for students interested in Biology, Education, English/Creative Writing, Equestrian and Integrated Media & Digital Filmmaking.)

For a complete list of campus visit options, go to our 2009-2010 Campus Visit Schedule. You are also welcome to schedule an individual campus visit Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sign up online or call the Office of Admissions at (800) 876-7207.

Highlighted Major: Digital Filmmaking
filmmakingOur hometown, Columbia, is exhaling from hosting another successful True/False film festival. This is the world’s premiere documentary event. It presents and screens myriad films including Academy-Award winning movies with their directors in tow. Each year Stephens is also the setting for the Citizen Jane Film Festival that celebrates the accomplishments of women in the filmmaking world. With this backdrop, it becomes easier to understand why this would be a great location in which to be a digital filmmaking major. With an accomplished faculty, elite visiting artists, prestigious internship opportunities, and advanced studio space and equipment, our department is breaking new ground in this high profile industry. With multiple forums to showcase their work, our students receive the important experience and training needed to prepare themselves for the professional jobs that come calling upon graduation.

(As an undergraduate acting major way back when, I was actually asked to perform in a student’s short film once (my character ended up getting shot in the forehead). So it’s with first-hand knowledge that I can brag about how good our students’ work is—no thanks to my modest acting abilities.)

So when you tune in to the Oscars this Sunday and celebrate the fact that Kathryn Bigelow could become the first woman ever to win Best Director, go ahead and picture yourself in her position. It’s possible and we can help make it happen.

And don’t forget that there’s a scholarship that only you, as a filmmaking major, can earn. To get more details about it, please contact your admissions counselor.

Come Robin … to the Batcave
sculpturesThere are a lot of reasons why Columbia is great—for example, the sculptures of animals playing instruments on the courthouse grounds. But to fully appreciate our setting here in the middle of the country, you need to spend a day outdoors. And I’m going to walk you through that day right now.

Imagine it’s a 90 degree day in early August and you feel a bead of sweat waiting to fall off the end of your nose as you hike through the forest. You reach the platform two stories above the entrance to the cave and as you descend, so does the temperature. By the time you feel the waters of the underground stream lapping at your ankles, it’s become a perfect 67 degrees. You link up with the rest of your team and hoist the canoe over the first rocky portions of your subterranean journey. Already you’ve figured out the cave-shuffle and each step confidently finds purchase on the slick rocks. You appreciate the opportunities to float gently in the almost perfect silence, but you also enjoy the time out of the raft, feeling the rock all around you.

cave In one of the bigger caverns, you sit and munch thoughtfully on a granola bar as you admire the slow progress of the cave formations. Your headlamp catches some motion and you glance up in time to see a bat traveling down the passage. Your trek concludes with an eight-foot waterfall, and you challenge yourself to climb up it. After a couple of false starts, you best the downward force of gallons of water and summit your Everest. You are thoroughly drenched as you exit the cave. It has been four hours and two underground miles since you last saw the sun. The heat no longer seems so oppressive as you lay out letting the rays whisk the moisture away. You pass under the rock bridge as you wander back to you car. Back on campus your bed beckons and it is with great satisfaction that you give in to your exhaustion.

You can do that here. You can do a lot here.

As we continue to spend most of our time indoors, we’re dreaming this month about livening up our work spaces. Meet your admissions counselor here.

If there was no “professional appearance” to maintain, what would you want to decorate your office with?

Hannah: Harry Potter themed ...
Heather: St. Louis Cardinals memorabilia!
Gabe: Candles, big floor pillows and an elaborate chandelier hanging right in the middle. Picture Indie Chic meets Midwest comfort.
Chris: Joe Montana memorabilia; hey, he is the greatest football player of all time!
Sarah: I’m kind of addicted to old items right now. I think I would get some pink depression glass and some cool art deco paintings.
Xander: I’d contract Nicoletta Ceccoli to do full-wall murals.

Seniors and Transfer students: now would be a perfect time to apply to Stephens—it’s free if you apply online, not to mention the process is quick and easy. Wouldn't it be a relief to have one other option when it comes time to really make that all-important college decision?

And if you have yet to turn in your FAFSA it would be beneficial to do that soon!
