Picture Perfect

You know when you’re bored online how you can find your way to some random websites? Well, I happened upon a photography site and was really impressed with some dance team images.  There were leaps and flair, synchronization and pointed toes. But as I was glancing through the shots I realized that these young women have nothing on the talented dancers we have the pleasure of watching right here. The Stephens College New Works Dance Concert in April was absolutely amazing and actually inspired me to dust off my old tap shoes (I can still “Shuffle Off to Buffalo,” but not in a way that would impress anyone).

I’ll discuss our dance program in further details below, but if you want to perform (or witness) some perfect pliés, start here.

And if there are questions we can answer along the way, give us a call at (800) 876-7207 or find your Admissions counselor and email her/him directly.

As always, thanks for reading and providing feedback!

Cheers,

Must Love Dogs
dogI haven’t actually seen that movie but I did just watch this clip and while the bunny is very cute, it’s clearly a situation where the residence hall residents can’t have pets in their rooms. That’s not the case here. The better part of a decade ago, we were trailblazers in the pet hall universe and we continue to expand on this successful program. We recently announced that this fall we will open Pet Central (maybe you saw the article about us in the New York Times). We are devoting the entirety of Searcy Hall to pets and their owners (that’s upwards of 70 rooms)! Plus, we will have a Doggie Daycare and many other animal activities for students and their pets to enjoy.

catLet us know if you'd like to bring your best (furry, scaly, feathered) friend from home. Just contact your admissions counselor to change your housing preference.

And now for some random animal facts!

  • Anteaters prefer termites to ants.
  • Animals will not eat another animal that has been hit by a lightning strike.
  • An elephant's tooth can weigh as much as 12 pounds.
  • An elephant trunk has no bone but 40,000 muscles.
  • Cats make over 100 different vocal sounds; dogs can make about 10.
  • Contrary to popular belief, dogs do not only sweat by salivating. They also sweat through the pores on their feet.
  • Crocodiles swallow stones to help them dive deeper.
  • Dogs and cats consume over $11 billion worth of pet food a year.
  • Dogs and cats, like humans, are either right or left handed ... or is that pawed?
  • Dolphins sleep with one eye open.

While you can’t have an elephant or a dolphin in you dorm, there are many creatures we do welcome.  Plus we’ve just relaxed our weight limit, so we’ll be rolling out the welcome mat for that big black lab of yours.

Activities for Prospective Students
Summer RegistrationWe are available at your fingertips!  You can now text your admissions counselor at (573) 823-7938. So go ahead and demonstrate your lightning-quick texting abilities and ask us a question—we promise to be impressed.

We encourage campus visits for all students as this is the best way to decide if an institution is right for you. You and your family can come to Stephens any weekday of the year and we will engage you in as minimal or as thorough an experience as you desire.

In the summer, we offer a tour of campus (including a viewing of a residence hall), and meetings with your admissions counselor and a financial aid adviser, if you like. During the school year, these visits also often include meeting with a professor, sitting in on a class, eating a meal in the cafeteria with a student ambassador, and even staying overnight with a current student.

You are welcome to schedule an individual campus visit Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sign up online or call the Office of Admissions at (800) 876-7207.

For those who are part of our incoming fall class, be sure to sign up for Summer Registration on June 25. Our June 21 date is already full. (If you can’t come to campus, no worries—we’ll register you by phone.) It’s also not too early to get a head start on your first collegiate reading assignment:When Everything Changed: The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to the Present

Highlighted Majors: Three-Year, Two-Summer B.F.A. Programs
DancersIt’s summertime and college students everywhere have returned home or headed on vacation.  But we have students in a couple of majors who have waived that midyear rite: our theatre and dance enrolled in our three-year, two-summer B.F.A. programs.

Instead of basking poolside working on tans, they are in studios and classrooms perfecting their craft. Theatre students who have completed one year here are on campus for the Summer Theatre Institute, while those who have completed two years are in Spirit Lake, Iowa, for our Okoboji Summer Theatre (pictured right). Our dance majors are staying on campus for the Stephens Summer Dance Intensive

OkobojiSo what do these students get in exchange for giving up much of their summer breaks? Well, for starters, they graduate a year faster than the standard four, which gives them an advantage over their peers. They also get to work in the most “real world” type settings a college can create. Our Okoboji players, for example, are producing 13 shows in 10 weeks! They are eating, sleeping, and breathing theatre in a professional company. You won’t find that sort of training elsewhere. And our dancers are busy working with prestigious international guest faculty to further broaden their repertoire and create connections.
