Welcome
to the April 2010 issue of We are Stephens, an enewsletter published
just for you by the Stephens College Office of Admissions.
Stars!
I just learned that April is Global Astronomy/Stargazing Month. That feels about right. This is the month that we really begin to celebrate our group of incoming students—the future Stephens Stars. We are hosting receptions and information is flying back and forth as we start the process of preparing class schedules and living arrangements. But (and this is an important caveat) it is not too late to hitch a ride to the shooting stars. We are still accepting and processing applications and would love for you to be a part of our Class of 2014.
I’m asking that you
spend time this month doing one of two things: if you’ve already secured your place at Stephens, take time these evenings to stare at the beautiful nighttime sky (there is a meteor shower on April 21st); or look to the future by nabbing your spot among our Stars ... apply now!
If this celestial talk has left you with questions, give us a call at
(800) 876-7207 or find your Admissions
counselor and email her/him directly.
As always, thanks for reading and providing feedback!
Cheers,

Xander Kennedy

Activities for
Prospective Students
Individual
Visits are the best way to decide if an institution is right for
you. You and your family can come to Stephens any weekday of the year
and we will engage you in as minimal or as thorough an experience as
you desire. These visits usually include a tour of campus and a meeting
with your admissions counselor. Additionally, they often include meeting
with a professor, sitting in on a class, eating a meal in the cafeteria
with a student ambassador, and even staying overnight with a current
student.
And if weekday visits don’t work for you, we offer Saturday
Visits, where you get to participate in a discussion/presentation
by our president, Dr. Dianne Lynch, talk with Admissions staff and tour
campus. Upcoming dates are April 10 and April
17.
Our final Open House of the year is this Friday and Saturday, April 9-10—it’s not too late to sign up! That same weekend, we have the following special preview events planned: Education Day, a Digital Film and Integrated Media event, an English and Creative Writing Preview, an Equestrian Showcase and a Biology “Murder Mystery," with an opportunity to win a $1,000 scholarship.
You are also welcome to schedule an individual
campus visit Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sign up online
or call the Office of Admissions at (800) 876-7207.
Extra!
Do you ever wish newsboys still roamed street corners shouting out headlines and selling papers? That actually doesn’t have anything to do with the upcoming discussion besides the fact that their classic cry of “Extra!” leads me directly into a look at our extracurricular activities. (But if you like you can have the "Newsies" soundtrack playing in the background as you read the rest of this newsletter.)
Stephens is not simply a place to receive a top-flight education in a quintessential college town environment. It's a place where you can select from a smorgasbord of clubs and organizations like a film club, a dance team, a minority society and service organizations; we have it all. At this time of year, our student groups treat the Stephens and local communities to multiple activities like:
The Prince of Wales Club’s 83rd Annual Charity Horse Show, which will raise funds for the local Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Club. This club, composed of equestrians, is the oldest continually active equestrian riding club in the country (founded in 1927). During the two-day event, April 24-25, our Saddleseat, Western, and Hunter/Jumper seats will be on display. Last year’s event won the Missouri Horse Association’s "Best One-Day Horse Show" Award. This is a great chance to get a glimpse of our beautiful stables and talented students and alumnae.
The Warehouse Theatre’s production of "Some Girl(s)," a sparkling and biting effort from playwright Neil LaBute, which runs April 14-17. Our Warehouse Theatre is an entirely student-run theatre that produces nearly as many shows each year as the official Theatre department company, The Playhouse Company. Any student who is theatrically inclined (regardless of major) is welcome to join the Warehouse. Come out and see them on stage later this month!

“6 Women with Brain Death or Expiring Minds Want to Know"
Our 66th Annual Student Designer Fashion Show, “NU Luxe,” which not only features the work of our student designers but also is entirely produced by our talented fashion department. The show, set for April 17, is sure to be a crowd pleaser, as the show is sold out year after year!

If these activities don’t whet your appetite, take a look at the other groups we have. I know you’ll find something exciting and enjoyable.
