Undergraduate Psychology and Counseling

The Stephens Psychology department prepares students to become
professional psychologists in academic, educational, hospital, human
service, business and government settings.
QUICK FACTS

Columbia hospitals, clinics or human service agencies, ranging
from group homes for troubled youth to women’s shelters

in professional psychology journals
- Become familiar with psychological services at local community
treatment facilities as a member of Psychology Club
or the Stephens chapter of Psi Chi,
a psychology honor society
- Earn a Master of Education in Counseling
in just one additional year of study at Stephens
- Choose to minor in Forensic Science, which
will introduce you to the application of biology and psychology
in the legal field
B.S. IN PSYCHOLOGY
Interested in pursuing a career in clinical, forensic or
counseling psychology? Stephens will prepare you for
graduate school with a strong foundation in math and
science. You will analyze your personal growth in courses
on psychological adjustment and development, and
learn to analyze and solve case studies using theories
from cognitive, social or educational psychology.
Examine issues in gender, forensic, physiological and
organizational psychology. In your senior capstone
course, you will produce original research under the
mentorship of a faculty member.
B.A. IN HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
This degree will prepare you for entry-level employment
in occupations where training in psychology and child
development is an advantage. Study is combined in the
Education and Psychology departments at Stephens.
A teaching certificate is not required. Graduates
enter human services fields, including management,
childcare, teaching, social services and drug or alcohol
abuse counseling.
MASTER OF
EDUCATION IN COUNSELING PROGRAM
With this flexible program, you can work toward your master’s
degree through evening coursework while working full time. You
may specialize in the following tracks: elementary/secondary
school counseling, licensed professional counseling, and marriage
and family therapy.

FACULTY
Stephens faculty members are experienced professionals who provide
individual assistance in discovering and developing students’
abilities. Among the faculty are a published author in the field
of counseling psychology, the former director of a women's treatment
center for substance abuse, and the former director of senior
services for the state health and senior services department.
