Biology Scholarship Contest - "Medical Mysteries: A Forensic Crime Scene"

Open House

Win a $1,000 scholarship! The competition is open to high school juniors and seniors who plan on majoring in biology at Stephens College.

Students attending the April 9-10 Open House will be presented with a case study and evidence that must be cataloged. By attending three 20-minute seminars, students will learn to analyze forensic data, including blood, fibers and hair. A visiting chemical engineer from Gates Corp., Dr. Karla Bier, will evaluate the presentations made based on the evidence collected. Participants will be graded on a group portion, a science portion, and a presentation.

An example case study starts out with:
On the evening of November 19, 2008, a call was placed to 911 saying a murder had taken place at a popular hunter's cabin resort in Lake Ozark, MO. Police arrive at the scene and find Caleb Smith in a pool of blood in the cabin...
