Breaking the Pattern is a breast health awareness program
created by Stephens in 2005.
Breaking the Pattern leverages the talents of senior fashion design students
to create fashions inspired by breast cancer survivors and intended
to promote breast health. The students have 10 days to interview breast
cancer survivors, conceptualize the design and construct original, creative
garments that communicate a message about breast health awareness. The
rules are simple: use only “non-apparel” materials, make
it attention-grabbing and don’t exceed $50. Pink is the required
color.
Each year the garments are completed in early September, with a few
chosen to become part of a downtown Columbia window display project
in October for Breast Health Awareness Month. In 2006, some of these
dresses were featured at Nordstrom in Charlotte, N.C
