Stemming from Middle English, the journal title once meant a person who would travel before to arrange lodgings. In a gesture of hospitality, the women of this year's staff would like to invite you to pull up a seat and join us for a while. Lose yourself in the tradition and future promise of the Stephens College Harbinger. Within our pages reside works both curious and quaint, humorous and serious - perhaps even startling. If you enjoy prose, poetry, art, or photography, surely you'll find something here to stir your imagination!

Harbinger’s mission statement:
A sign of things to come. For over fifty years, Harbinger has been publishing the poetry, prose, and artwork of students from all disciplines at Stephens College, a liberal arts college for women in Columbia, MO. Though published under several different titles over the years, in 1980 the literary magazine became Harbinger, a name that signifies its dedication to publishing the work of the writers and artists of the future. As a student publication, Harbinger is often the starting point for many writers, giving them an opportunity to showcase their abilities for the first time. Though Harbinger features mainly unpublished, new voices, we maintain a high literary standard of writing quality. We closely examine each submission, accepting only those which have sharp, concise language, vivid detail, and fresh, innovative subject matter. We seek out pieces that eloquently speak to the common human experience, as well as works that take risks and push our readers to the edge. As one of the top college literary magazines, it is our mission to publish the best that Stephens College has to offer, and as an effect, to inspire our readers with a glimpse of what the future holds.
