For many years women have celebrated going to parties by dressing their best in the latest fashion, from the Victorian era with gaudy dresses to the 1900s, which had many different styles, including flapper dresses, cocktail dresses, bell-bottoms and mini skirts. Today the scene has changed dramatically and there are multiple types of parties you can go to, all with their own unspoken dress codes. My personal favorite is the rave scene, which takes a certain thought-out preparation from the hair to the makeup and down to the shoes. There is a proper and precise way to achieve the “proper” rave girl look. A rave girl, for those of you that are not familiar with this terminology, describes a girl who dresses in a particular–generally slutty–way for a dub show, which is where dubstep is played on large speakers by a live DJ. At these dub shows boys and girls alike go to “rage”, which mean to party is a very crazy excited fashion, usually under the influence of a wide range of mind- and mood-altering substances, thus allowing them to party longer and harder than they could in a completely sober state.
Every girl wants her own unique flair inside the stereotypical look. Lucky for you girls there are multiple options out there. We’ll begin with tops and bottoms. When going for the rave girl look you want to show as much leg as possible in a fun but easy-to-move-in way. The best way to achieve this is by slapping on a pair of spandex booty shorts, which you can find in a wide range of colors, from black to metallic red to hot pink. Want something less revealing and more cutesy? No problem. You can find tutus on any rave gear site, such as i<3Raves.com. They supply a large range of rave gear for both men and women, from LED light-up tutus to animal hats to thigh-high stockings and LED shirts and much, much more. Now many girls, including myself, enjoying pairing some sort of tights (usually fishnets) with their outfit. This can add an extra flair that bare legs just don’t achieve; it’s a must for any true rave girl outfit.
Now although it is acceptable for you to go without a top on as long as you have your nipples covered, this is not exactly the best idea when you take into account all the jumping around and dancing you will be doing. The better idea is to go with a top on. Since you’re going to be getting very sweaty and nobody likes a sticky sweaty top sticking to them, less is better. This can be achieved by throwing on a swimsuit top, bandeau or even a bra. (The best part about the rave scene is that showing up your underwear is perfectly acceptable).
Next we need to get foot-gear on. Stay away from heels! There are many reasons for this. First of all, if you step on someone’s foot while jumping around– not a pretty picture. Second, if either of your heels breaks while dancing, or slightly rolls out from under you–another not-so-pretty picture. So don’t even mess with it unless you’re looking for a disaster. Your best bet is some type of sneaker with what are called “fluffies” over them. Fluffies are basically leg warmers that come up to just below the knees, come in many bright colors, and as the name suggests, are fluffy and fuzzy. If fluffies aren’t your style either, go grab some fuzzy comfy slippers instead.
Now we move to the hair and hats. Some girls like to put in fake colorful yarn dreads or dye their real hair bright colors, however those are more permanent accessories that you have to factor into your everyday life. The easier way to go if you want some color in your hair is clip-ins. Clip-ins are fake hair extensions that come in all sorts of fun colors that you can simply clip into your hair for one night. In one minute, out the next, quick and easy. What you want to do with your hair though should never be super elaborate because it will come undone throughout the course of the show, unless you’re really lame and never dance. My personal favorite thing to do is to start with my hair down and then, as the night goes on and I get sweaty, put my hair up to keep cool. The next thing you want to consider is an animal hat. Animal hats have a top which portrays some sort of animal, such as a cat, meaning the hat would have cat ears. The hat also has long sleeves that hang on your sides and go down to pockets with animal paws on them where you can put both of your hands. These hats are always made out of a soft material varying in fuzziness, making them extra cuddly and cute. Boys and girls alike wear animal hats at shows and they are great both at shows and in regular life.
Lastly, and funnest of all, is makeup. This will vary largely from girl to girl. Some girls wear foundation, some don’t. Maybe you’re a fan of blush. I know I am, but maybe you’re not. What about lips? You can do something fun with them or you can leave them plain. However the one thing you’re going to want to focus on with the rave girl look is the eyes. You want your eyes to make a statement. The best way to go about doing this is starting with bold eyeliner. You can do this by using colored eyeliner or a thick rim of black; I personally love to do cat eyes with black eyeliner. Next is the eye shadow; don’t be shy. Go crazy with it and apply some bright neon orange, or maybe purple is more your style. Now the final touch: glitter. Lots and lots of wondrous, fabulous glitter. On the eyes, the chest, the arms, anywhere and everywhere you want! You can never have too much glitter. Take one last look in the mirror at your sexy, sassy self. Make sure everything is where it should be. You are now a bona fide rave girl. Now go rage your heart out!
