Summer Film Institute

Through Stephens Summer Film Institute (SFI), a hands-on, intensive workshop, students learn the different aspects of filmmaking by rotating through each key position on a film set. Students have worked with visiting filmmakers including:
- Donald Petrie, director, “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” and “Miss Congeniality”
- Tricia Brock, director, “Killer Diller,” “Gossip Girl” and “Ugly Betty”
- Jennifer Hawks, vice president at Dreamworks
- documentary filmmaker Kim Longinotto, “Rough Aunties” and “Sisters in Law”
- documentary filmmaker Steve James, “Hoop Dreams” and “The New Americans”
- producer Marilyn Atlas, “Real Women Have Curves”
In Summer 2010, students created the narrative feature “Red Cloud," a Cold War thriller set on the fictional campus of Sheldon College. The film was directed and produced by Stephens instructor Chad Freidrichs, a local filmmaker. Students also helped produce a music video and created a behind-the-scenes documentary of their experience.
