The hunt for Stephens treasure

Sign up for the third part of the Hunt for Stephens Treasure
(Even if you signed up in February, you still have to sign up in March; teams can be the same...
or different. If you didn't compete in February, you can still compete in March.)

  • ChestDid you know that Maude Adams, a celebrated actress who played Peter Pan on Broadway for 10 years, also headed the theatre department at Stephens in the 1930s and ’40s?
  • Did you know that for many years Stephens students had a secret society? Or that at one point Stephens had a dance camp in Colorado?
  • Do you realize Stephens was founded before baseball was invented, and 60 years before the first American car was designed and assembled?
  • The Stephens story is one of many big events and official acts, but also one of little-known facts and fascinating anecdotes. The Hunt for Stephens Treasure is your chance to learn all about it this year, but it’s also an opportunity to get to know the faculty, staff and students who, with you, make up Stephens College today.

What you need to know:

  • This is a three-part treasure hunt, each part in a slightly different format. Go here to see the general rules.
  • The first hunt will be on Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, from sunrise to sunset. Go here to see the rules for the first hunt!
The second hunt is March 10, 2008, and starts at 7 p.m. in the Kimball Ballroom of Lela Raney Wood Hall. Rules to be announced at the trivia night event. You may bring in snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. The April format and date will be announced later.
  • In order to allow for greater participation, department heads and faculty are encouraged to be flexible on hunt days.
  • You can participate as an individual or in a team of up to five members (including at least one student; and one faculty member, staff member or alumna).
  • Monthly winners get cash, pizza or movie tickets – as determined by the
judges panel, comprised of three retired faculty members.
  • At the end of the spring semester, the name of the Grand Prize winner will be drawn from the Treasure Chest.
  • The more hunts you participate in (and the more you win each month), the more coins you will get to put in the Treasure Chest.

The Grand Prize?
Choose between a $1,000 cash gift or a $1,500 Stephens scholarship!

What you need to have:

  • A camera phone or digital photo camera
  • Occasional access to the Internet on the day of the hunt
  • Faith, trust and a little bit of pixie dust!

What you need to do before Thursday, March 6:

Go here and see who is already signed up or looking for a team, and SIGN UP! You can compete as an individual or team. Teams are strongly encouraged for this trivia night hunt format, and we can assign you to a team if you sign up as an individual looking for a team. If you really want to compete as an individual, you can do that, too.

You don't have to stay on the same team every month, but you can if you want to. Again, groups MUST include at least one student AND one faculty or staff member or alumna.

The Rules
These rules apply to all three hunts, so you should read them many times.
Before each hunt, you should also read the rules that apply specifically to that part.

  •  The Hunt for Stephens Treasure will come to you in three parts, each in a slightly different format and each creatively named: Part 1 (February 15) (see rules), Part 2 (March 10) (see rules), and Part 3 (April 30 - May 1) (see rules).
  • You can participate as an individual or form a team, and you can participate in a different way each month. For example, you can go crazy and participate as an individual in Part 1, be part of a team in Part 2, and be part of a different team in Part 3. Or you can participate in the same way every time. You can also choose to participate in only one part, in two, or in all three parts. Or, of course, not at all. (And be a Scrooge.)
  • Teams of up to 5 members must consist of at least one student AND one faculty, staff or alumna, with the remaining members in any other configuration. And yes, we will check…
  •  …when you sign up online at  https://www.stephens.edu/175/treasurehunt/signup.php. You can sign up as a team, as an individual, or as an individual looking for a team. And be sure to name your team! Creativity won’t be rewarded, but we will find it entertaining.
  • Prizes to be awarded at the end of Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 are:

Individual
First place –  $50
Second place – pizza
Third place – 2 movie tickets

Team
First place –  $250
Second place – pizza party
Third place – 1 movie ticket per team member

The Grand Prize, to be awarded at the end of the semester, is $1,000 in cash, or a $1,500 scholarship.

Oh, yes – Who gets the Grand Prize?

Every time you participate, you will have a chance to get coins to put in the Treasure Chest. Keep in mind that team members get twice as many coins as people who participate as individuals. At the end of the spring semester, the name of the winner will be drawn from the Treasure Chest.

So, YOU might get the Grand Prize!

And the more you participate (even if you don’t win the monthly hunts), the greater your chances!

  • Whatever you do to come up with answers, do NOT destroy Stephens’ (or anyone else’s) property, and don’t do anything illegal. If it seems impossible to gain access to an answer without destroying something or doing something illegal, we’re sorry to tell you, you’ve come up with the wrong answer.
  • Sabotage is not only mean, it’s also against the rules (not to mention it’s against the Ten Ideals).

The Rules – Part 1
February 15, 2008

  • You will have from sunrise to sunset to figure out all the clues and turn in your answers. Winners will be determined based on the time of submission, as well as on the accuracy (and sometimes creativity!) of the answers submitted.
  • This hunt will include a mix of questions and clues from three categories: people, places and things.
  • On the day of the hunt, you will need occasional access to the Internet, and you (or someone on your team) must have digital photography capabilities (cell phone, digital camera, etc.) Not all clues will be answered with photographs, however, so read the clues carefully to find out exactly what you need to do!
  • Creative answers are acceptable (and encouraged) where indicated, as long as they’re defended persuasively in your submitted answer. However, creativity will do you no good once the winners have been declared. Judges’ decisions are final, and whiners will not be tolerated.
  • Winners will be announced within 36 hours of the end of the hunt, and highlights will be presented later in the semester. So, even if you don’t win, your most creative answer might at least get you five minutes of fame!

The Rules – Part 2
March 10 , 2008

  • You will answer trivia questions about women. Some questions will be about Stephens. Others about women in various roles or fields. We'll have about 10 questions in 10 categories/rounds. Think Jeopardy...but we will not make you phrase your answers in the form of a question, Alex. At the end of each round, we'll collect an answer sheet from each group and score them at that time.
  • Our illustrious treasure hunt judges will be present. Winners for Part 2 will be announced that evening!
  • Vicki Russell, an esteemed community member and amazing woman, will emcee the event.
  • Bring snacks and non-alcoholic beverages.
  • Team members may bring things to decorate their tables (e.g. tablecloth, a fun centerpiece that communicates your team name perhaps, team t-shirts or costumes)
  • Have fun!

The Rules – Part 3
April 30 - May 1, 2008

What do I need to do?

    • Find as many items on this list as you can, in any order, and take a picture of each.
    • All items require at least one photograph, but some require two or three.
    • Please keep in mind that, while some factual information has crept into the list and should also find its way into the photographs you submit, creativity is essential. There is no single right way to interpret the items on this list, so there is no single “right answer” - show some imagination!
    • And DON’T destroy or permanently alter ANY property in the process.
    • When an item requires that you “tell the judges” (not many of those), you need to write something down.

    It’s that simple.

    But, how?

Okay, you can go about this in one of two ways. First, you have to make a decision. Are you digital or analog? (we don’t know what “analog” means either, but it’s the opposite of what happens when you enjoy doing things like burning CDs).

If you’re digital, follow these instructions:

    • Take digital photos.
    • Label them – save them as their corresponding item number (item1.jpg, item2.jpg, etc.)
    • Write answers for items that require them. Be sure to number each answer according to its corresponding item number.
    • Save your photographs on a CD.
    • Put your CD and your answers in an envelope, write your name (or team name) on it, and turn it in to the Office of Marketing and PR (3 rd floor LRW) no later than 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 1.

If you’re analog, follow these instructions:

    • Take photos – digital or otherwise – and have them developed.
    • Label them – write their item number on the back.
    • Write answers for items that require them and staple each answer to its corresponding photo.
    • Put all photos and answers in an envelope and turn it in to the Office of Marketing and PR (3 rd floor LRW) no later than 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 1.
