Do Not Open Until 2033 : Time Capsule
Sponsored by the Student Government Association 2007-2008
Stephens’ 175th anniversary is an occasion to celebrate. As we take a look at our past for inspiration, we are filled with pride in our history, but also with gratitude to those who have preserved the memories that make up our collective identity.
A fitting way to honor such generosity is to preserve memories of our own for future generations, to keep traces of our own days in a time capsule until Stephens’ 200th anniversary.
- Who can contribute: Students, faculty and staff, either as individuals or as members of various departments.
- What: Something that says the most about who you are today in the least amount of space. Click here for submission guidelines.
- When: The time capsule will be open to the entire campus community until April 4, 2008. The closing ceremony will be held in early May 2008.
- Where: Bring items to the Student Leadership and Programming Office any time before April 4, 2008. Be sure to attach a submission form (Department Form / Individual Form) to your item (see submission guidelines).
- Questions? Contact Lindsey Weber, Student Government Association President, at (573) 815-5935 or lindsey.weber@sc.stephens.edu
And remember, whatever you choose, it should last long enough to tell our story in 2033.
Guidelines
- Contribute one item. Students, faculty and staff can contribute either as individuals or as members of various departments (one item per person or department).
- Print paper items (letters, documents, etc.) on the highest-quality paper. Newspapers and other low-quality papers are highly acidic and deteriorate quickly. If you write a letter, you might describe life as it is now, or make predictions about what life might be like in 2033.
- Remember that technology evolves quickly, so anything that requires playback can be problematic, unless you’re willing to include the playback device in the capsule (i.e. include a DVD player if you wish to contribute a DVD).
- Avoid perishables and large items in general, but don’t give up on your big ideas – take a photograph instead. Black-and-white photos are more stable than color prints, but both are acceptable. Place photos in archival quality photo envelopes (only one per envelope).
- Enclose your item in an archival quality envelope, folder or container, or wrap it in acid-free tissue.
- Fill out a submission form, and take your item, along with the form, to the Leadership and Programming Office, in Stamper Commons, any time before April 4, 2008.
- Participate in the closing ceremony, to be held in early May.
- Contact Lindsey Weber, at (573) 815-5935 or lindsey.weber@sc.stephens.edu, if you have any questions.
